Pure Silver Baba and Nyonya Basket

What is it, by the way ?

Baba Nyonya are the descendants of the Chinese immigrants of late 15th to 16th century to Malaya (now is Malaysia). The Chinese then has assimilated part or full of the Malay custom mainly through marriage whereby the Chinese men taken the Malay women as wives or concubines.

This Baba Nyonya basket, made from pure silver, is inspired by late traditions where some of these baskets are used during the proposal of marriage whereby it is taken by the middle person of the suitor to the intended bride’s parent as a gift. The Baba Nyonya has taken on this Chinese tradition. In the basket, cakes, food and gifts are placed and sent to the bride’s parent as a proposal of marriage for their daughter. Nowadays, it is no longer widely used by the Baba Nyonya due to the western influence in Malaysia.
