Isthmus of Kra COLLECTIONS

This collection is named for the Isthmus of Kra, the narrow strip of land connecting the Malay Peninsula to mainland Asia. The Andaman Sea lies to its west, and the Gulf of Thailand to the east.

Isthmus showcases the fusion of cultures in the Southeast Asian region. The embellishment of each item features floral motifs commonly found in traditional Southeast Asian woodcarving.

From as early as the 4th century BC, Hellenistic influence made its way from the Mediterranean coast along the fabled Silk Road into the Indus Valley, and from there as far as Southeast Asia. Evidence of this can be seen in the startlingly similar scrolled leaf motif that occurs in the art of classical Mediterranean, Central Asian, Indian and Southeast Asian cultures.

What is it ?

A bullock cart or ox cart is a two-wheeled vehicle pulled by oxen (draught cattle). It is a means of transportation used since ancient times in many parts of the world. They are still used today where modern vehicles are too expensive or the infrastructure does not favor them.

Used especially for carrying goods, the bullock cart is pulled by one or several oxen (bullocks). The cart (also known as a jinker) is attached to a bullock team by a special chain attached to yokes, but a rope may also be used for one or two animals. The driver and any other passengers sit on the front of the cart, while load is placed in the back. Traditionally the cargo was usually agrarian goods and lumber.

Bullock carts were widely used in Malaysia before the introduction of automobiles, and many are still used today. These included passenger vehicles, now used especially for tourists. Passenger carts are usually equipped with awnings for protection against sun and rain, and are often gaily decorated.

What is it, by the way ?

Zhulanping is shaped after a baluster. This vase features a bat flapping above a luscious peach. The vase in rich in symbolism, as the Chinese character for ‘bat’ is phonetically similar to that of good fortune, and peaches and peach blossoms impart good wishes of longevity, good luck and good business prospects.
